Learn how to teach / train / dive with people who have physical disabilities but are medically able to dive.

As dive leaders we are always faced with challenges in the water. People with a disabilities are always facing challenges in their every day lives. It is human nature to be afraid of the unknown, learn about the unknown.  Remember we all have disabilities – some are more apparent than others.


Adaptive SCUBA Instructor / Dive Control Specialist / Assistant Instructor / Dive Master Training Course

Course Objectives:

  • To provide certified Open Water Instructors from All Agencies with the specialized knowledge and skills required to teach SCUBA diving to students with physical and sensory disabilities.
  • To provide certified Dive Control Specialists / Dive Masters / Assistant Instructors with the special knowledge and skills required to assist Instructors, lead diving activities, and act as a buddy to students and divers with disabilities.
  • At the end of this course the Instructor will be able to competently teach and certify individuals with physical disabilities at the Open Water Diver Level. Dive Control Specialists / Assistant Instructors / Dive Masters will be able to act as an Adaptive Buddy, assist Instructors, and lead diving activities for divers with disabilities.
Physical Assists
  • Simulated access to beach and boat
  • Transfers, grips, and carries

Aquatic Abilities

  • Modified entries and exits
  • Surface swimming adaptations
  • Use of mask / snorkel / fins / webbed gloves
  • Buoyancy control
  • Weight distribution and hydrostatic positioning
  • Paralyzed limbs and prostheses
  • Assisted dives, descents and ascents
  • Regulator clearing and retrieval
  • Mask clearing / removal and replacement
  • Air sharing
  • Emergency ascents
  • Equipment removal replacement surface and under water
  • Modified communication skills – blind and deaf

Each Instructor / Dive Control Specialist /Assistant Instructor / Dive Master candidate will assume the role of a paraplegic, quadriplegic, or visually impaired student diver.

  • Ascents and descents
  • Ear clearing
  • Mask clearing
  • Air sharing ascents
  • Emergency ascents
  • Tired diver on the surface and below the surface
  • Entries and exits
